Value to Members

Providing members highly personalized services to plan, manage, and enjoy their retirement drives CalSTRS decision-making. Investing in state-of-the-art technology and expanding onsite services increases the long-term value to members. The building’s 13-story tower and two levels of public space provide:

  • Advanced technology
    • Sophisticated information security
    • Greater Web-based communication capability
  • Expanded member service center
    • Individual benefit counseling offices
    • Workshop and meeting rooms
  • Increased employee productivity
    • Green building features decrease absenteeism
    • Wellness Program rooms for classes on leading a healthy lifestyle, how to decrease stress

Value to the Environment

Built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification standards, the 409,000-square-foot building is the most environmentally friendly headquarters in the region. Careful consideration to balance our fiduciary and environmental responsibilities is reflected in the resource and operational efficiencies of the headquarters.

The efficiencies result in cost and environmental savings such as:

  • Savings in energy costs exceeding $130,000 a year.
  • Estimated 12 percent less energy use than comparable buildings, nationally.
  • Reduced water usage of about 40 percent using low-flow water fixtures and high-efficiency irrigation.

Value to CalSTRS Financial Future

Sustainability creates long-term value for the financial future of our members. The headquarters, as a LEED certified building, provides higher value over time compared to non-LEED buildings. The use of quality, sustainable building materials and equipment increases the building’s lifespan, freeing more dollars for investments.

CalSTRS headquarters is on time and under budget:

  • $13.2 million saved using a team build approach in construction and design.
  • 20 percent of building materials from within a 500-mile radius.
  • $10 million savings on original construction cost of $276 million.

Review the fact sheets below for details on the building’s construction and energy efficient (green) features.
